Contractors continue protest, Govt unmoved

[ March 06, 2018 ] Jammu: Contractors under the banner of Contractors Association Jammu Province on Tuesday continued protest against the government demanding deferring of PAO system till all the pending payments are cleared. A large number of contractors gathered at Public Works Department, Jammu here and held protest in support of their demands for payments of work done by them for the last more than three years under AIBP Schemes and desilting of all the canals in Jammu province. The contractors decided that no work will be taken in hand till our all claims are settled.“Not even single contractor will participate in the tendering process of the Irrigation and Ravi Tawi and Flood Control Departments,” asserted Sham Singh Jamwal, President of the Association. “Though it is a revolutionary system but the Government staff on ground is not well versed with it and with its introduction teething problems are expected”, they said and requested the Government to defer this system of payment to April 1, so that it does not operate harshly against the financial interest of the working contractors and beforeMarch 31, all the work done payment of the contractors, which is in crores, may be released in toto. Association criticized the higher authorities of Irrigation Department for not releasing their payments worth crores of rupees for work done by them in last three years under AIBP SDRF schemes and desilting of canals in Jammu province. He urged the Irrigation and Flood Control Minister to intervene into the issue and so that contractors may get their payments.
