Dr Drabu sacrificed in the name of hollow principles

[ March 13, 2018 ] The high moral ground taken by PDP Chief and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has stumped all especially when we look back the tenure of coalition Govt in state and her statements batting faith on Prime Minister Narendra Modi having capacity and intelligence to solve the Kashmir issue. Though Politicians often define democracy in beautiful words saying even accommodating diverse views is the beauty of democracy, then why honest and competent person like Drabu was sacked for expressing his views. Sacking him for saying that Kashmir is not a political issue is definitely a harsh decision on part of Chief Minister. She could have stated that this is Drabu’s personal view and PDP doesn’t endorse his views. Experts are of the view that decision has been taken in haste as CM already going through tough time after losing Srinagar parliamentary seat and facing flak from all walks of life in valley has made her to overreact over the issue. In another dimension to the issue, BJP should learn lesson from the issue as more than three years tenure of coalition Govt has not brought any change in its core ideology where as BJP kept on changing its ideology to remain in Govt. When the PDP-Congress coalition came to power after the 2002 elections in Jammu and Kashmir, he was appointed economic advisor. In 2014, he formally joined the PDP and successfully contested the state elections on the party ticket from his home constituency Rajpora. On Monday, the Mehbooba Mufti-led Jammu and Kashmir government led by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti decided to sack the state’s Finance minister, Haseeb Drabu. The state government’s decision comes following his comment at an event in New Delhi, stating that “Kashmir is not a political issue.” The statement drew sharp reactions from the PDP and had set off a political firestorm with the government asking the Finance minister to ‘retract his statement immediately’. Drabu’s comment has come at a time when PDP and its partner in the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are in a fix over a lot of issues.
